Defense wins championships, but offense puts fans in the stands and points on the board. With a season under head coach Sean McVay’s dynamic offense, the Rams can put up some big numbers in 2018.
On paper, the Rams improved their offense. They let Sammy Watkins walk, but traded a first-round pick to New England for receiver Brandin Cooks. Cooks gives the Rams a true number one receiver and is described as a “perfect fit” by the coaches.
“He’s a perfect fit,” wide receivers coach Eric Yarber said. “He’s that missing piece in the puzzle.”
Cooks believes the Rams offense can put up big numbers. Back in April, Cooks posted a picture of five members of the 1999 Rams (Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt and Az-Zahir Hakim), better known as “The Greatest Show on Turf.”
That offense is considered one of the best in NFL history. Warner threw 4,353 yards, 41 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and being awarded NFL MVP. Faulk was used as a Swiss army knife rushing for 1,381 yards and seven touchdowns while leading the team in receptions with 87 catches for 1,048 yards and five touchdowns. Bruce, Holt and Hakim combined for 165 catches, 2,630 yards and 26 touchdowns. The offense totaled 32.9 points per game, not too far off the 2017 29.9 PPG.
Gurley, like Faulk is a Swiss army knife. In 2017, he ran for 1,305 yards and led the league in rushing touchdowns with 13 and caught 64 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns. Cooks, Woods and Kupp can each put up big numbers in McVay’s offense as Woods and Kupp showed last season.
Kupp led rookie receivers in receptions with 62 while adding 869 yards and five touchdowns. Woods added a career-high 781 yards on 56 catches and five touchdowns. Adding Cooks to spaces the field and more importantly, gives Goff another weapon.
Goff increased his quarterback rating by 36.9 points (63.6 in 2016 to 100.5 in 2017). With more familiarity in the offense and improvement in talent, league MVP is not out of the question for the third year quarterback. According to Odds Shark, Goff has the seventh-best odds to win MVP.
This offense is poised to takeoff in 2018. McVay is known as one of the best offensive minds in football for his initiative offense, similar to the 1999 Rams offensive coordinator Mike Martz. But now with more chemistry and better talent, McVay and this offense expectation should be to be categorized with some of the best offenses in NFL history.
