Saturday was Clemson’s Junior Day, a huge recruiting weekend for the Tigers as some of the nation’s top 2019 recruits came in to see what Dabo Swinney has to offer.
The 5-star recruits on campus were linebacker Owen Pappoe (Loganville, Ga.) and running back Quavaris Crouch (Charlotte, N.C.). The highly regarded 4-stars included guard Keiondre Jones (Hogansville, Ga.), defensive end Brandon Smith (Mineral, Va.), cornerback Andrew Booth (Lawrenceville, Ga.), outside linebacker Kevin Harris (Loganville, Ga.), quarterback Sam Howell (Monroe, NC), receiver DeMarcco Hellams (Hyatsville, Md.), cornerback DJ Turner (Suwanee, Ga.) and cornerback Sheridan Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.). Texas’ Leon O’Neal, one of the top safeties in the 2018 class, was also in Clemson on an official visit.
4-star cornerback Taiyon Palmer will take an official visit to Tiger Town on the 26th. Palmer was a former Duke commit.
Defensive line coach Todd Bates visited 4-star DeMarvin Leal last Wednesday. The Texas native named his top-5 earlier this month with Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M.
247Sports’ final rankings for the Class of 2018 were released last week, and two Clemson commits were awarded 5-star status — receiver Derion Kendrick and defensive lineman Josh Belk. Per the final rankings, Clemson’s recruiting class now has six 5-star commits for the 2018 season. While the Tigers have only signed 15, 40% of the class is rated as a 5-star. Quality over quantity.
Top wide receiver Justyn Ross has yet to commit to a school, and with signing day only three weeks away, the talented Alabama native has a lot to think about before coming to a decision. Clemson has been in touch with Ross frequently; they were the first coaches to visit after the dead period was over with. During the visit, however, Ross was sick and wasn’t able to talk for long. With Deion Cain headed for the draft, Tee Higgins is the only big-threat receiver left on the Tigers roster. Ross has narrowed down his decision to Alabama, Auburn and Clemson. He is set to visit Alabama and Auburn in the coming weeks.
On Friday Zerrick Cooper announced he would be transferring for the upcoming season. With the abundance of talent at the quarterback position, a move was expected to happen. The spring competition will now be between Kelly Bryant, Hunter Johnson and early enrollee Trevor Lawrence. We wish Cooper the best wherever he decides to continue his journey.
