As the All-Star Break ends and the second half of the NBA season kicks off, BetOnline has updated their future odds for the NBA Championship.
The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers possess the best title odds in their respective Conferences. Here’s a look at how a new acquisition in Brooklyn affects their title chances. How will future deals and a return to health help lead the Lakers back to the NBA Finals?
Brooklyn Nets (+270)
While Brooklyn’s odds to win the NBA Title didn’t sky rocket with the addition of Blake Griffin. The signing was enough to jump the Nets over the Lakers as NBA Title favorites.
With Griffin headed to Brooklyn I understand why the odds didn’t drastically rise for Brooklyn. For one simple reason, Blake Griffin is a shell of his former self. NBA fans have tricked themselves into outrage over Griffin joining Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden at the Barclays.
Lob City Blake isn’t walking through the Barclay doors on Thursday night.
The Nets were the clear cut favorites in the East regardless of what moves they make between now and the deadline.Brooklyn’s primary focus going forward is tooling up for a potential finals matchup with the defending champs. While moves like signing Blake Griffin sure up some holes for the Nets, it ultimately doesn’t change their trajectory much either way.
Los Angeles Lakers +285
The Lakers still hold the second best odds to win the NBA Title despite some poor play heading into the All-Star Break.
Los Angeles is expected to be heavily involved in the buyout market and it’s evident that they will be looking to sure up their front court. Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrel haven’t made the impact, Lakers fans expected them to before the season. It also doesn’t help that Anthony Davis has been on the shelf for a few weeks.
Look for the Lakers to be heavily involved in talks when Andre Drummond is bought out. Newly available LaMarcus Aldridge is another name to keep an eye on when it comes to the defending champs.
The Lakers have a bit of a tougher path back to the finals than they faced last season. The Clippers look more together than they were a year ago, Utah is white hot this season.
It’ll be a bit of a dog fight for the Lakers at times come playoff time but you can’t go wrong with LeBron James leading your team.
