Last September, it began for 16 Featherweights in Bellator MMA for the weight class’ Grand Prix tournament.
Over the course of two Bellator MMA shows that month, eight fighters saw their hopes for the belt at 145 lbs. dashed.
In December and January, we’ve seen eight turn to six as AJ McKee (third-round submission- triangle armbar) and Darrion Caldwell (first-round submission- rear-naked choke) each won to set up the first Grand Prix semifinal.
On Mar. 13, the semifinals will be determined by the back-end of the round of eight to headline Bellator 241 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, the home court of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun.
We’ve already taken a first look at the Patricio Pitbull vs. Pedro Carvalho fight headlining Bellator 241.
Now, let’s take a look at the co-main event on Friday the 13th between Daniel Weichel (40-11) and Emmanuel Sanchez (19-4):
Notes: Both of these quarterfinal contests will be five rounds maximum at five minutes per round. We will refrain on making a call for this fight at this time.
Heading into the Mar. 13 co-main event, Daniel Weichel is the taller contestant at 5-foot-10, one inch taller than Emmanuel Sanchez’s 5-foot-9 frame.
How they got here:
Daniel Weichel eliminated Saul Rogers by unanimous decision in the round of 16 on Sept. 28. He’s posted a record of 3-2 in his last five fights.
In the other corner, Emmanuel Sanchez stopped Ty-wan Claxton (second-round submission- rear-naked choke) in his round of 16 fight on Sept. 17.
He’s gone 4-1 in his last five fights.
The Tale of the Tape:
Tapology shows that Emmanuel Sanchez owns a five-inch reach advantage over his opponent, Daniel Weichel (76 inches to 71 inches) heading into this fight.
Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix Quarterfinals: Friday, Mar. 13, Uncasville, CT
