Rafael Lovato Jr. (10-0) defeated Gegard Mousasi last June in Bellator 223’s main attraction in London, winning the Bellator MMA Middleweight championship in the process.
Last Monday, however, it was announced that Lovato would be giving up the championship due to cerebral cavernoma, a hereditary, nonmalignant tumor in the brain.
Symptomology of this tumor includes the slowing of blood flow through the cavity.
In the case of cerebral cavernoma, when a malformation is in contact with a person’s cerebral cortex, the patient runs the risk of suffering epileptic seizures, strokes and hemorrhages.
Cerebral cavernomas have no tissue inside the tumor’s walls and thus have no protection, changing in size with time.
All of us here at Armchair would like to pass along our best wishes to Rafael Lovato Jr.
On Tuesday, one day removed from the announcement of Lovato vacating the title, Bellator MMA revealed that it would be putting the newly-vacant 185-lb. belt up for grabs in the co-headliner of the May 9 Bellator 243 event inside San Jose’s SAP Center.
In that night’s co-main event, Gegard Mousasi (46-7-2), the incumbent Bellator MMA Welterweight champion, will attempt to become a double champ as he challenges Douglas Lima (32-7) in a fight between competitors who will have battled a combined 96 times.
Note: We’ll abstain from making a prediction on this co-main event at this present time.
Heading into the May 9 co-headliner, both contestants in this title fight stand level at 6-foot-1.
How they got here:
Both contenders have gone 4-1 in their respective last five fights.
Gegard Mousasi won last time out via split decision against Lyoto Machida in Bellator 228 back in September. This will be Mousasi’s 56th career MMA fight.
In the other corner, Lima enters this fight on a four-match winning streak.
Last time out, he defeated Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision in October.
This fight will mark Douglas Lima’s 40th in his professional career.
The Tale of the Tape:
Tapology shows that Mousasi has a 1.5-inch reach advantage (76 inches to 74.5 inches) over Lima.
Bellator Middleweight Championship: Bellator 243: May 9, San Jose, CA
