Even though this commitment came later in the day, it’ll be the biggest one of the day. Tyler Baron has already played the last couple years of years in Knoxville alongside fellow Vol commit Cooper Mays at Catholic. However, keeping him here was definitely a hard fought battle.
Jeremy Pruitt and his staff saw Kentucky, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech all enter the picture at various points throughout this recruitment. Ultimately, you have to think having Baron’s father, Patrick Abernathy, on staff, helped push the Vols over the edge.
In Baron, the Vols are getting one of the best defensive ends in the country, and a guy that’s been around the program quite a bit. He’s already got a great frame at 6-5, 255lbs, and has great speed off the edge. With the depth at defensive line currently, Baron has a great chance at competing for playing time early. However, he could also cover the OLB position in this defense with some improved coverage skills.
Regardless, Baron is one of the crown jewels of this 2020 class for the Vols, and is a great talent for the future of this Vols defense.
