Recruiting the defensive line had been pretty slow for Jeremy Pruitt and the Vols up until today. That changed today with the addition of Briarcrest (DT) Omari Thomas. Thomas has been at the top of the board for Tennessee in this 2020 class for quite a while. The decision came down to Tennessee, Auburn, and Texas A&M in the end. It looked like Thomas had been trending towards the Vols lately, but Auburn was never going to make it easy. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher was also making a pitch throughout.
In Thomas, the Vols are adding an outstanding player at a very needed position. While the Vols certainly aren’t done on the D-line, this class needed a spark after losing Jay Hardy to Auburn a few weeks ago. While the Vols definitely aren’t done recruiting Hardy, Pruitt and his staff needed to secure at least one highly rated D-lineman.
Thomas is already built like an SEC defensive tackle and for sure plays like one. He’s one of the top defensive players in the 2020 class, and was just named Mr. Football in Tennessee’s Division II, Class AAA. Getting guys that can make an instant-impact their first year on campus has been a focus for Pruitt’s staff. Thomas will have a great chance to crack the rotation next year as a freshman.
Also, one of Thomas’s teammates is set to commit tomorrow. 3* (APB) Jabari Small recently de-committed from Ole Miss and has considerable interest in the Vols. Perhaps with Thomas now on board, Small will look to join his teammate on Rocky Top. Regardless, recruiting is going to be huge the next couple weeks.
