The Chicago Bulls broke their franchise record for most points scored in the first quarter, but they fell short for their first game of the season against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Chicago began the night on fire by scoring 41 points in the first quarter. Philadelphia didn’t trail by many points and they shifted into sixth gear in the following quarters.

Chicago had five players scoring in double figures. Zach LaVine played stellar by scoring 30 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Bobby Portis scored a double-double by adding 20 points and 11 rebounds to Chicago’s stat line.

Jabari Parker came off the bench scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. He showed that he can add some firepower with the bench rotations. Antonio Blakeney showcased his talents by scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. Cameron Payne started at point guard in the absence of Kris Dunn. Payne didn’t score a basket but he dished out five assists.

Missing Kris Dunn

Dunn was absent for the first game of the season. The following passage is taken from a Joe Crowley piece posted on the Chicago Sun Times website and it offers some clarification.

“Just hours before their 2018-19 regular-season debut, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg announced that Kris Dunn was away from the team to be with his girlfriend, who gave birth to his son on Thursday.”

Justin Holiday scored 10 points and four rebounds. Chicago started off slow in the second half and Philadelphia took full advantage. Philadelphia outscored Chicago in the third quarter by 19 points.

Ben Simmons posted his first triple-double of the year with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Joel Embiid thrived off of Simmons’s big night posting a double-double of 30 points and 12 rebounds. Dario Saric posted a double-double as well with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Robert Covington had a great night as well by scoring 20 points and five rebounds. There was a total of eight players on Philadelphia’s roster scoring in double figures.

Chicago plays their home opener against the Detroit Pistons. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 20.
