CHIEFS KEY PLAYER: JUSTIN HOUSTON
Houston has been a destructive force when facing the Broncos. Since drafted in 2011, Houston has 11.5 sacks against the Denver Broncos. However, it has been his recent success that should worry Denver. The Chiefs linebacker has had seven sacks against the Broncos in three games since 2016. If Houston can destroy Denver’s backfield, the Broncos may not have a chance in this divisional showdown.
BRONCOS KEY PLAYER: DENVER DEFENSE
The Broncos haven’t had a turnover since Week 4 and only have four through eight weeks of action. Interestingly, all four of their turnovers have been interceptions. The Denver defense will need to find some way to knock the ball out of Kansas City’s arms in this contest. The Chiefs come into the week as the best team at protecting the ball. If Denver wants to win this game, they’ll need to create turnovers and keep the Chiefs offense off the field.
GAME PREVIEW AND ANALYSIS
The Denver Broncos have shown how vulnerable their offense is during the last two weeks of action. For the Kansas City Chiefs, it has been their defense that has been exposed. Both teams head into a Monday Night showdown looking to right their wrongs and gain control over the AFC West.
With a win, the Chiefs could put a cushion on their lead atop the division. A Denver victory would allow the Broncos to move to 3-1 in the division, which could be vital if they make a playoff push. Whatever the case, both teams want to get back on track with a solid, statement-making win in Week 8.
Kansas City is coming off a game in which they squandered away a sure victory late. Because of two defensive holdings calls with virtually no time left in regulation, the Chiefs gave the Oakland Raiders the opportunity to win the game. But it became evident with around five minutes left in the 4th quarter that the Chiefs were struggling to close out the game.
Offensively the Chiefs have looked excellent all year and have protected the ball. Quarterback Alex Smith is one of the best in the league this season and has the help of some extremely talented individuals. Those individuals are receiver Tyreek Hill and rookie running back Kareem Hunt. This trio needs to perform well against a top-ranked defense in the Broncos.
There is no doubt that Denver will have its hands full with the offensive juggernaut that is Kansas City. But the true struggle for the Broncos is to try and get a flat offense going. Denver hasn’t been able to protect quarterback Trevor Siemian and the run game has been a non-factor in recent weeks.
C.J. Anderson will need to step up his game in this contest, but look for Jamaal Charles to attempt to have a big game. This will be Charles’ first game against his former team and it is sure to be somewhat emotional in his return to Arrowhead.
Monday night will be a tough game for both teams, but only one team can make a statement to reign supreme in the AFC West.
