One could say week one for the Cincinnati Reds has gone better than expected. Zach Cozart, Reds’ SS, has been a major factor for the success of the Reds this year. Cozart has quietly been one of the most underrated infielders in all of baseball for the last two years. Most notably, his 2016 campaign was his most successful, posting career highs in HR, 16, in only 121 games. It appears he has picked up where he had left off to begin the 2017 year. With two triples this year already and a batting average of .450, Cozart looks primed for a breakout year. He also leads the team in RBIs with four. Cozart has been a major factor to why Cincinnati has been off to such a great start and Cincinnati is hopeful he can keep things going.
On top of being a solid bat for the Reds, Cozart is one of the best defensive shortstops in the MLB. He has made some phenomenal plays in his career and has only had 13 errors since 2015. Cincinnati is hopeful he can continue his great play at shortstop. Even when he isn’t performing at the plate, Cozart never let that problem affect his glove. It’s his most consistent part of his game and sometimes it’s amazing the plays he can make.
The only knock on Cozart are his ongoing health issues. In seven years as a professional, Cozart has never seen a full year of playing. From Tommy John surgery to a torn ACL, Cozart has had great years but can never stay healthy for a full year. He has already sat out some of this year with a sore wrist. He has sat out since Saturday, the 8th against St. Louis. This must change for Cincinnati and Cozart if they plan on having a successful year. Cincinnati cannot afford to have their starting shortstop constantly being in and out of the lineup for them to have success this year.
The 2017 season has treated Cozart well so far, and Cincinnati fans are excited for him. He has been a fan favorite since he entered the league in 2011 and instantly became a fan favorite. They hope that he can stay healthy and if he can, they believe he will help the Reds have a successful 2017 season. The success he has had this year have come at great times and some of these games Cincinnati would not have one with him jumpstarting the offense. Cincinnati has had surprising success so far and Cozart has more than contributed to that. Cozart can help propel the Reds to a competitive year and surprise the MLB. And if he stays healthy, it could very well turn out that way.
