Jason Kipnis is getting a second opinion on sore right shoulder. He is suffering from a strained right rotator cuff. Terry Francona stated that if the Indians were in the middle of their playoff push, Kipnis would be able to play. They decided to sit Kipnis down for two weeks to get the shoulder to 100 percent. He will be forced to miss opening day. The Indians are trying to avoid another injury like Michael Brantley last year.

The Indians are reportedly looking at a couple options to replace Kipnis on the opening day roster. They could possibly move Jose Ramirez to second and play Giovanny Urshela at third. They could also use utility man, Michael Martinez. He has the most experience in the big-league but he is also the oldest and has the lowest ceiling. They could also call up Erik Gonzalez. He has only 17 big-league plate appearances, but the Indians like his defensive ability. The Indians only other option would be to sign a veteran free agent such as Kelly Johnson.

Michael Brantley played in his first minor league game Wednesday, March 15th. It was a huge step in the right direction for Brantley to return to big-league action. In the third inning, Brantley hit a double off the outfield wall. He is also slated to play Friday in the minor league. Chris Antonetti stated that he is very pleased with Michael’s progress. Expect Brantley to come back sometime early this season.

Carlos Carrasco allowed eight earned runs in two innings of action on Monday, March 13th against the Chicago White Sox. The team said that his fast ball looked flat. The team had him undergo an MRI to make sure everything was okay, but the MRI revealed that he has swelling in his elbow. Terry Francona says that the issue is not serious.

Bradley Zimmer has had one of the most of the best spring trainings. He has posted a .344 BA and eight RBI’s. Zimmer is still projected to start the season in Triple A Columbus. The results though are promising after a season in which he saw his strike outs raise and his batting average lower.

Francisco Mejia played in 11 games this spring training where he batted .421 with two home runs and a double. He played very well in limited action but it should be no surprise that the club optioned him. He is only 21 years old and he considered the Indians best prospect. The Tribe also already has two established catchers in Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez.

World Baseball Classic

Andrew Miller has struggled in the World Baseball Classic. He allowed four runs and two home runs in his only appearance. He was only able to get one out. I don’t think it should worry Tribe fans, as it was only a small sample. He will need to step it for the Indians compete this postseason.

Francisco Lindor is excelling in the World Baseball Classic. Lindor is currently batting .429 in 14 at bats. He also has two home runs and four RBI’s. He is continuing to show that he is one of the best players in baseball.
