The injury bug bit the New York Yankees early and often throughout the first week of the season. Injuries lead to opportunities for younger players to step up, and Clint Frazier has done just that for the Bombers.
Frazier went 6-for-11, with three homers in the three-game sweep of the Orioles, including the go-ahead three-run bomb that woke the Yankees up in the eighth inning of game two against Baltimore.
That monster slam propelled the Yankees to a 6-4 win, and then followed that up with two of the seven Yankee home-runs on Sunday.
Then how about following that up with 2-for-4 against Houston, with both those hits coming off Justin Verlander. The second hit was a scorcher off the top of the wall that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
I get that this may be a small sample size, and that Yankee fans expected to see this from Frazier in the years past. Better late than never, and Aaron Boone needs to keep putting Frazier in the lineup, EVEN when Giancarlo Stanton returns.
Whether this means giving Frazier some at bats at DH or letting him play in the field, while Stanton plays DH, Boone needs to consider this. Brett Gardner is way past his prime, and while is a quality fielder, his bat out of the lead-off hole just isn’t good enough.
With Aaron Hicks out for another month, maybe he can rotate Judge in center field to leave Frazier in left and move Stanton back to right. Judge was drafted as a center fielder and played sparingly at center for New York.
Frazier still has much to prove, but if he continues hitting the way he has been, he should be a regular in the 2019 Yankee lineup.
