Devin Funchess is having a great training camp cementing himself as the number 2 receiver on this team. While most people have their eyes on Christian McCaffrey and Cam Newton, Funchess has slipped under the radar. That might not be a bad thing though.
Entering his third year with the Panthers, Funchess has been productive in the role he’s played on the team. Last season he caught 23 catches for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns. A slight decrease in numbers from his rookie season, but injuries and a drop off in productivity were probably the reason for that. This season the Panthers added key pieces to the offense in Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel. Those two players take a lot of the load off of Newton while giving opposing defenses more to account for, and time for him to get the ball out of his hands. Funchess, entering his third year is the perfect position to have a breakout year.
The Panthers have the potential to have another special season. The only thing that can derail that is themselves. They have to utilize all the weapons of this team and Funchess is one of the most deadly ones if given the chance to thrive. It’ll be interesting to see how the Panthers work him into the offense this upcoming season.
