Preview

Southern Miss Golden Eagles 47-14 (25-5 C-USA)

Southern Miss was as dominant a team as anybody in the country. 5 conference losses and 14 losses overall makes for a solid season. They were far and away the best team in the Conference USA. They have a win over Mississippi State and a 1-run overtime loss to Ole Miss. This is a team that can compete and may take this regional.

Mississippi State Bulldogs 36-24 (17-13 SEC)

Mississippi State is a team that has had to battle an injury bug. They are a lot like the Clemson Tigers, where they were hot in the middle of the season but could not finish well. They own sweeps over Ole Miss, Alabama, and Tennessee. They open up the regional with South Alabama, a team they have played 3 times, winning 2 out of 3. It will be fun to watch Brent Rooker when he holds a bat in this region.

South Alabama Jaguars 39-19 (22-8 Sun Belt)

South Alabama is in the post season for the second year in a row. Everybody loves Travis Swaggerty right now. He controls the outfield with a “swagger” that make it impossible to get a hit down in the outfield. Oh, and he is the team best batter on the team. If he plays well, South Alabama can make it to the supers.

Illinois-Chicago Flames 39-15 (22-8 Horizon League)

You may be asking yourself “Who is Illinois-Chicago?” They are a team that exposed Vanderbilt early in the season. They bat as a team at .288 and score just over 6 runs per game. They can hit the ball but they can also sling the pitches. They are second in the nation in ERA with 2.57. They are a good addition to this regional and just might make it the toughest regional in the field.
