Back in 2013, the Brooklyn Nets made one of the worst trades in their franchise’s history. Since then it has been a roller coaster of a ride. They went from going all in to try and win a championship, to being a laughing stock in the NBA.

Now in 2019, the team now looks like they can possibly make the playoffs as they are currently the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. This team now looks like they have some promise for the future.

As stated earlier, back in 2013 the Nets made one of their worst trades in the offseason. They were coming off a season with a record of 49-33 and finished fourth in the East. The team was trying to build off that season and win a championship.

The worst trade ever

On draft night, the Nets made the trade that they thought would take them to that point. The team made a trade with the Boston Celtics receiving Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry. The Nets would give up five players and three first-round picks (2014, 2016, 2018) and the Celtics had the right to swap picks in 2017. Many thought that this these picks would be late first rounders at best, the problems is that the Nets went down real fast.

That season they won 44 games, 38 the next season and 21 the year after that. The problem with that was that they had no first round picks.

The Nets turned the team around 2016. The team fired general manager Billy King and hired Sean Marks. They then hired current coach Kenny Atkinson as their new head coach.

Righting the ship a bit

Under Marks, the first major moves were trading Thaddeus Young to the Indiana Pacers for their first-round pick. That year, they drafted Caris LeVert. They then signed Joe Harris and Spencer Dinwiddie.

Perhaps their biggest move came in 2017 when they trade for D’Angelo Russell. That gave them a young player to build the franchise around as well as drafting Jarrett Allen.

The Nets have recovered very well since that trade that put the Nets in danger. They have done well especially without their own picks. By trading away veterans for picks and finding assets, the team has done a great job with developing their young players.

Now for the first time in quite some time, the Nets have control of their own first round pick in 2019. The future right now looks very promising for the Nets.
