We finally have a glimpse of what Joel Embiid has been up to this offseason. In a video featuring Embiid and the Paqui One Chip Challenge, the Philadelphia 76ers star revealed he lost 25 pounds since the playoffs ended.

A slimmer and healthier Embiid could put the Sixers over the top in the Eastern Conference.

Who cares why it happened?

No player received more scrutiny during the most recent playoffs than Embiid. He just wasn’t himself toward the end of the regular season and into the playoffs and the team suffered as a result.

Maybe Embiid had a realization after the Game 7 loss to the Toronto Raptors that he needed to be a more reliable player for the franchise. Perhaps criticism about his conditioning from former players including Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen led him to make changes to his diet.

In addition to criticism from former players, media outlets took their shots about his commitment to basketball and how much he truly cared. Maybe even social media had some influence on some of his decisions this offseason.

But it doesn’t really matter what his motivation was to get in better shape. Embiid’s commitment to taking better care of his body and getting through the season healthy is all that matters.

With less weight he may get quicker and have more stamina during games. However, it could come at the expense of his dominance on both ends of the court.
