The hot stove is fresh off of a big week. It’s being rumored (as I suspected could/would happen in this article over a month ago) that the Baltimore Orioles are asking teams for offers on Manny Machado. The Boston Red Sox have yet to acquire a big name player to fill the power gap the team was missing last season. That’s where a match comes to fruition.
BRING HIM TO FENWAY
There’s definitely bad blood between Boston and Machado, but it wouldn’t be the first time a player has landed in Boston despite previous feuds. David Price and Red Sox beloved David Ortiz had a battle of their own before coming to an agreement to play together and settling their differences. Although Machado may have the 2016 arguments fresh in his head, the Sox could alleviate those harsh feelings. They can offer Machado a fresh start at his original position of shortstop. Along with that, the Sox are a team consistently in contention filled with young talent up and down the roster. Last and not least, they are one of the richest franchises in the sport and can give him a contract in the ballpark of what Giancarlo Stanton received from the Marlins (13 years, $325 million).
Breaking Down the Trade
The Red Sox would likely be able to offer the best package to the Orioles while still yielding a dominant team. The Orioles are in a clear state of win now or break the team down. The latter seems more likely, as they will be competing with a revamped Yankees squad as well as the reigning division champs in the Sox. The Sox would help them fill their 3B/SS vacancy in trading away Xander Bogaerts. Another piece that would be traded away would possibly be Blake Swihart. His primary position is catcher, but he has been used in a multitude of ways, having played 1B and LF sparingly as well. The pieces that would put the Orioles over the top would be adding left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez as well as top prospect Jay Groome. This would bolster an Orioles rotation that ranked 27th in ERA. Both are left-handers, Rodriguez having formerly been part of the Orioles organization. He was traded to the Sox as a prospect in acquisition for Andrew Miller. The Sox have an abundance of lefties in their rotation, being able to afford this heavily packaged trade.
Although the Sox lose their starting shortstop, a position prospect, a left-handed starter, and a top pitching prospect, they acquire one of the top 10 players in the game today. Manny is only 25 (and younger than Bogaerts), meaning he’s yet to hit his peak. He can transition back to shortstop while playing alongside fellow Dominican Rafael Devers. The Sox could find someone to play at 1st (i.e. WBC teammate Carlos Santana or his brother in law Yonder Alonso) and prepare to splurge on the 2018 free agency class.
