The fun controversy in the New York Mets world of hilarity is the status over Mets legend David Wright. The Mets front office seems more interested in saving money than bringing the fans the legend himself. For the last month, the Mets beat writers have been watching the progress of David Wright. Most have been questioning why the hell he is still on a rehab assignment. With 20 days left in the Mets season, the time is now to get him some time on the field, even if he is not 100 percent.
David Wright has been a complete professional through this entire situation. Between the workouts in Port St. Lucie, the rehab assignment, being pulled from that and working out with the coaches. This is nothing new with David Wright, who has been out of baseball for two and a half years. He will always be the stalwart professional. However, his desire to play professional baseball is still there. David Wright is far from the problem in this situation.
The front office, which is in a state of complete lame duckness, has mishandled this completely. The 2018 season has basically been a lost season for the New York Mets. In September, when the games are basically meaningless, the fans who pay for tickets, want to see something other than Jacob deGrom pitch for a Cy Young. (That is four more games after Tuesday night.) A David Wright return with continuous standing ovations would make the fans happier than hell. The Captain means a lot to the Mets franchise. They would pay just to see him return.
Instead, the Mets are running out a mix of Jose Reyes and Jack Reinheimer every couple days when someone needs a day. While Reyes is understandable because he will be considered the other face of the modern franchise, playing Reinheimer is pointless. Reinheimer might have a part of the 2019 team, but David Wright on the field at 80 percent would be better than a 100 percent Reinheimer. Instead, we are running out a journeyman to play more than he should.
If this is something familiar to the Mets fans, the problem constantly happens. Dominic Smith seems to be in a state of “we will play him when we feel like it.” Instead it is a game of running Jay Bruce at first base and letting Smith rot on the bench or in the outfield. Smith is a better first baseman than Bruce and Bruce is a better outfielder than Smith. Instead, they are playing their reversed positions and making things worse. While Jay Bruce will be on this team in 2019, it seems like the Mets are trying to find a way to get rid of Dom Smith.
So, meanwhile, why are the Mets running out Jack Reinheimer? What possible purpose does he serve right now? He can come into Spring Training and see if he makes the roster. However, it seems more likely he will be designated for assignment come Rule 5 Draft protection time. This is a waste of time that could be better served for David Wright’s return. The Mets, as usual, have no idea what they are doing.
