The Wolverines will enter Spartan Stadium as a touchdown favorite. This is just the type of scenario that Mark Dantonio’s Spartans thrive off of. They are notorious for playing with a “chip on their shoulder” in the past – including last season, when Sparty walked out of the Big House with a gritty 14-10 victory over the then ranked No. 7 Wolverines.
The scenario will be a bit different this time around, as Michigan enters the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the nation. Behind their steadily improving offensive line, the Spartans are beginning to find their true identity on the offensive side of ball.
Michigan running back Karan Higdon has strung together a stretch of five games with over 100 rushing yards, with his season high being 156 against Western Michigan.
On the defensive side of the ball, Michigan boasts the No. 1 pass defense and No. 2 overall defense in the nation. The Spartans aren’t too shabby on defense either.
Michigan State has the No. 1 rush defense in the nation with defensive end Kenny Willekes and tackle Raequan Williams standing out on the stout defensive line. Behind them, a solid linebacker group is led by NFL-ready Joe Bachie, who has recorded 43 total tackles through six games this season.
This year’s edition of the Battle for the Paul Bunyan trophy should be nothing short of an excellent defensive battle, with both teams coming off big wins and solid defensive performances. Michigan held Wisconsin to their fewest amount of points scored on the season, and Michigan State shut down the electric Penn State offense in Happy Valley just a week ago.
Unfortunately, there can only be one winner.
Prediction: Michigan 24, MSU 13
