Former Ravens wide receiver Mike Wallace has found a new home, and it’s with the defending Super Bowl Champions.
Wallace signed a one-year, $2.5 Million contract with the Eagles on Thursday. The deal represents just another example of Eagles’ General Manager Howie Roseman’s uncanny recruiting and negotiating ability.
After trading away wide receiver Torrey Smith to the Carolina Panthers a couple weeks ago, many believed that second-year wide receiver Mack Hollins would see his role increase. However, the signing of Wallace may effectively halt those speculations if only for the moment. Wallace will now be brought in to take over the departed Smith’s role in the offense.
While Smith managed to produce last year at the wide reviver two position, Wallace looks to be a major improvement. Wallace is younger, faster, and most importantly cheaper than the man he will look to replace. He will be used primarily as the deep-threat option, similar to how the Eagles used DeSean Jackson many years ago. His blazing speed will help to take the top off of the defense, forcing opposing coordinators to have to account for him. This well help Alshon Jeffery tremendously, as he will not have to worry about the possibility of double coverage.
Wallace has been sort of a journeyman so far in his NFL career. He was drafted by the Steelers in 2009, and since has played for the Vikings, Ravens and Dolphins.
In his most recent season with the Ravens, Wallace played in 15 games, and started all of them. He ended the year with 52 catches for 748 yards, and four touchdowns.
Eagles’ fans hope to see more of the same this upcoming season as they look to defend their crown.
