Heading into Saturday’s matchup, the Kansas Jayhawks will have a tough task when the Oklahoma State Cowboys visit David Booth Memorial Stadium. Both teams are coming off a loss as Kansas fell to the hands of the 3-1 Baylor Bears while the Cowboys lost to the then-unranked Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Kansas was on its first winning streak since 2009 but hit a brick wall when they traveled to Waco. The Jayhawks had all the hope heading into their matchup with Baylor, but after failing to move the ball down the field and allowing Bears’ quarterback Charlie Brewer to run all over them, they lost all their momentum and looked like the typical Kansas Jayhawks.
To get back on track and revitalize their momentum, the Jayhawks will have to force turnovers. The offense and defense for Kansas feed off of each other, once one side starts playing well, the other side immediately gets better. The most momentum the Jayhawks have found this season is in the turnover category as they have not turned the ball over much this season while forcing tons of turnovers in their first three games.
Kansas failed to force a turnover against Baylor and if it fails to force turnovers against Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius, the outcome could be the exact same as last Saturday. Offensively, Kansas has heavily struggled moving the ball down the field, especially in the passing game. Starting quarterback Peyton Bender misses targets quite often and his receivers often drop passes, which makes the passing game the Jayhawks’ biggest weakness.
The Cowboys average 539.3 yards on offense, but if the Jayhawks’ defense, which only allows 332.5 yards, can get stops, force turnovers and simply make plays, Kansas will have hope to win its first Big 12 game since defeating Texas in 2016.
On the other hand, in the last meeting between Kansas and Oklahoma State, the Cowboys destroyed the Jayhawks 58-17 and could do the same once again on Saturday. The game will come down to the Jayhawks offense, the Cowboys offense will find ways to score, but if the Jayhawks can seize their opportunities and get their run game going, allowing freshman phenom Pooka Williams to make plays, there could be a surprise upset waiting to happen in Lawrence, Kansas.
