Cam Newton, for the second straight week, looked like the 2015 NFL MVP version of himself as Carolina’s offense looked impressive yet again. Newton completed 26 of his 33 passing attempts for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns against a talented Detroit defense.
It appears that last week’s performance by Newton and the Panthers offense against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots was not a mirage. Despite some running game struggles, the Panthers moved the ball with ease through the air, and it was all thanks to Newton’s great performance.
Defensively, the Panthers held the Lions to a mere 50 yards rushing, and held the gunslinger Matthew Stafford to under 300 yards passing. While they let the Lions back into the game late, overall they fared well against one of the better offenses in the NFC.
Two weeks ago it seemed like a stretch to say the Panthers would get back-to-back road wins in New England and Detroit, but here they are sitting at 4-1 and in first place in the NFC South
Next up for the Panthers: the 4-1 Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football. Get your popcorn ready, folks.
In one of the best games of the 2017 NFL schedule to date, this is certainly must-watch television. The Eagles are coming off an impressive 34-7 dismantling of the Arizona Cardinals, and will be ready to go for Thursday’s showdown in Charlotte.
Can the Panthers come away with a third-straight win against yet another tough opponent? Anything can happen when teams are forced to play on a short week, and Thursday is one game all football fans simply cannot miss.
