The Carolina Panthers training camp is set to begin today, with many having high expectations for this season.

There has been a lot of activity surrounding the team leading up to training camp, which lead some to believe that this will be another down year for the Panthers.

With the loss of a general manager (GM) Dave Gettleman and veteran offensive lineman Michael Oher, some believe that the team is taking a turn for the worst. The concerns begin at the quarterback position.

QB Cam Newton hasn’t been fully cleared to practice. Newton is still recovering from shoulder surgery he received at the end of March. On the bright side, he did come into camp 15 pounds lighter than he was the year before.

When asked about Newton’s confidence coming into training camp this season Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said, “I think it’s very high right now, and part of it is because of all the work he’s put in this year.”

Panthers tight end Greg Olsen and linebacker Thomas Davis both reported to camp as well. Many were concerned that the duo would hold out until they received a new contract offer.

When asked by NFL Network’s Tiffany Blackmon about his decision not to hold out, Olsen said, “At the end of the day it really came down to with everything going on, obviously now with the transition to [interim GM Marty Hurney], kind of the slight chaos that went around for another week I didn’t think that is was right to add fuel to the fire.”

With the recent firing of Gettleman, a new contract for the two veterans looks to be in the near future.

This training camp is shaping up to be an interesting one for Carolina. Cam Newton enters camp much more slim, Olsen and Davis did not hold out and rookie Curtis Samuel was spotted being dropped off at camp by his mom.

It will be quite interesting to see if the team can block out the off the field distractions and get back atop not only the NFC South but the league itself.
