Welcome to the final week of regular season previews for SEC football! This week features a hotly-contested rivalry game forged of iron, and an unexpected twist to another storied rivalry as we conclude the season. Without further delay, let’s get into the preview.
The good ol’ Iron Bowl. Boy has that series brought us some delightful memories. This Saturday sees the latest chapter of the rivalry as the top=-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide look to topple No. 6 Auburn in a classic showdown. The Iron Bowl has seen everything from blowouts to field goal returns for touchdowns (2014 anyone?). Saturday will also determine who battles Georgia in the SEC Championship game, with the West championship on the line similar to Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XII.
Ole Miss @ No. 14 Mississippi State
It’s the Egg Bowl, and it features a Thanksgiving Day showdown between two SEC rivals. Coming off a 31-24 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, Ole Miss looks to defeat in-state rival Mississippi State, who is ranked 14th in the country and coming off a 28-21 victory over Arkansas last week. This is a game where no thanks will be given on turkey day.
Bad freakin’ blood. That is all you can say about this game. The annual Sunshine State Showdown takes center stage on rivalry week, with two teams coming off victories. The Florida Gators are coming off a 36-7 victory over UAB last week, while Florida State rides a 77-6 victory over Delaware State. Can Florida finally beat the Seminoles in one of the most vicious rivalries in college football?
The Missouri Tigers went from 0-4 in SEC play to winning three straight. They have a six-day turnaround against the Arkansas Razorbacks after Mizzou annihilated Vanderbilt 45-17. The Razorbacks are 4-7 and coming off a 28-21 loss to Mississippi State. They look to end on a positive note with a home showdown on the way against the surging Tigers.
No. 7 Georgia @ Georgia Tech
In the second in-state rivalry game, the Georgia Bulldogs are still angry after being knocked off the No. 1 pedestal by Alabama. They travel to the Georgia Tech campus for a rivalry showdown against the Yellow Jackets, who are reeling from a 43-20 loss at Duke. The Yellow Jackets are 5-5 and look to defeat the Bulldogs, who ride a wave of positive after a 42-13 victory over Kentucky.
Big Blue Nation, meet #ActionJackson. The Kentucky Wildcats play host to the Louisville Cardinals, and their ace in the hole: Lamar Jackson. Continuing his campaign for Heisman No. 2, Mark Stoops and the Kentucky defense look to go 8-4, and stop the Heisman hopes of Jackson en route to 8-4 and a victory at home to close the regular season in Lexington.
All season, Tennessee has been looking for a conference win. So far, they’ve failed in the worst way possible. Sitting at 0-7 in SEC play, they have their best shot to do so this Saturday against Vanderbilt. Both teams are last in the SEC East. There’s nothing left to say, other than this is a game about who will simply get a 1 on their SEC win column.
No. 3 Clemson @ No. 24 South Carolina
The Gamecocks are finally ranked this season. After quietly building a case for ranking in the top-25, they have their biggest test to date in rivalry week. They host the reigning, defending, undisputed national champion Clemson Tigers in an ACC vs. SEC showdown. South Carolina comes off a 31-10 victory over Wofford last week, while Clemson rides a 61-3 victory over The Citadel. Who comes out on top of this Gamecocks vs. Tigers showdown? Tune in to find out.
Rounding out the final week of regular season play for the SEC, the Texas A&M Aggies travel to Baton Rouge for a showdown against the LSU Tigers. With rumors of Kevin Sumlin’s demise running rampant, they come off a 31-24 victory over Ole Miss. They look to continue their ways in Sumlin’s possible swan song in College Station against the 8-3 LSU Tigers, who come off a 30-10 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers.
