Yup, it’s the offseason alright.
With spring practice under way, Texas Tech has adopted a new protocol, hierarchy, gimmick, or whatever you want to call it. It’s nothing new or revolutionary, but the program has gone out of their way to make this a big deal and it’s had very mixed reactions from both sports writers and fans. Coach K does something similar at Duke, but so did Charlie Strong in 2013. This idea is pretty common in programs around the country, and to be quite honest I think it’s pretty lame. But if you watch the videos above, you can see that the players are taking to it. Given how undisciplined the team has been (multiple run-ins with the law and flags every other play), I think a little humility is exactly what this team needs right now.
Coach Kingsbro has caught a lot of flack in the recent past for seeming too relaxed and this is step in the right direction. Surely, S/T Coach Rusty Whitt pushed for this as the military employs this kind of “shaming” in special forces training. It’s a sign of a much needed culture change. Maybe this move seems a little desperate, but it’s not secret that this is a make or break year for Kliff. We’ll find out how much this will motivate the team come September.
