Rouse High School senior libero/defensive specialist and Texas Tech commit Katy Northcut officially became a Red Raider on Tuesday, March 20, as it was announced by Texas Tech head coach Tony Graystone.

Northcut told Armchair that Texas Tech was her first choice school and had visited Lubbock many times. A quick scroll through her Twitter will show pictures of her attending football games and visiting United Supermarkets Arena.

“I’ve kept up with Tech ever since I was younger because my dad went there,” Northcut said. “It’s always been my school since then.”

Northcut played varsity volleyball for the Rouse Raiders for three years, according to MaxPreps. In her senior year, she registered two kills and finished with a 3.8 kill percentage. She had 46 aces her senior season, 42 in her junior year and 38 her sophomore year. She registered 574 digs and only seven dig errors her senior season. In ball handling, she recorded 63 total assists.

Overall, Northcut recorded 1,591 digs, 128 assists, eight kills and 126 aces over her varsity career at Rouse.

Northcut was also named to the 5A All-State third team alongside her teammate Dani Cole by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

She helped the No. 7 state-ranked Raiders get to a 50-4 overall record in her senior season, and Rouse went undefeated in district play, according to MaxPreps. The Raiders were undefeated both home and away, with their only losses coming at neutral sites. Even then, the Raiders were 24-4. Rouse went on to play in the District-5A State championship, but Rouse lost to Prosper 3-2.

“Katy has been a member of our 2018 class for quite some time, and I’m happy to finally be able to announce her,” Graystone said in a Texas Tech Athletics news release. “Katy is easily one of the best liberos in Texas in the ’18 class and will immediately improve our serve receive, defense and out-of-system play. I love Katy’s court presence and her overall energy, and I’m excited to see her impact on Red Raider volleyball.”

A video was also made by Texas Tech Athletics with a short interview with Northcut in which she describes some of the reasons why she loves Texas Tech, what she hopes to bring to the Red Raiders, how she describes herself as a player and what she hopes to accomplish at Texas Tech.

Northcut also told Armchair that the main aspects she’ll bring to the team is positivity and energy. The Texas Tech volleyball team finished last season with a 19-15 overall record and finished off the year with a deep National Invitational Volleyball tournament run that ended with a 3-0 loss to Ole Miss in the title match.
