A month into the NFL season and a lot has changed, making it the perfect time for an updated NFL mock draft. Instead of the regular NFL Draft column this week it will be a three-round NFL mock draft. It’s obviously belligerently early still so this is more of a fun exercise than something to live by. It gives an idea of what range players are being looked at in and what direction NFL teams could go. It’s more about amusement than anything else, mock draft’s are enjoyable to read and write. I also threw in some trades because why not? Player grades are constantly changing and won’t be finalized until a few weeks before the draft, keep that in mind.

*Draft order based off of record and strength of schedule

First-Round

  1. Arizona Cardinals- Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State

  • This pick is a no brainer for the Cardinals. They have so many holes everywhere, but luckily they’ve already drafted their franchise quarterback in Josh Rosen. Taking Nick Bosa is the smart move. Bosa is the best player in the draft and a game changer on defense. His elite hand use will translate to NFL pressure right away. He also has a non-stop motor, plays with perfect leverage, and handles the run. Bosa and Chandler Jones is a nasty edge duo.

  1. New York Jets- Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama

  • The pieces are there for the Jets on defense and they have their potential franchise quarterback. They now need to build around Sam Darnold to ensure he pans out. It all starts with protecting him and the best option is grabbing left tackle Jonah Williams. Williams is a technician with a mean attitude. He can instantly dominate as a run blocker with his strength and ability to work to the second level. In pass pro he has a strong anchor and uses his hands well.

  1. San Francisco 49ers- Andraez “Greedy” Williams, CB, LSU

  • Obviously with the Jimmy Garoppolo injury it’s assumed this season is lost for the 49ers. That’s okay because they can end up with an elite talent who fills a major hole. San Francisco needs cornerback help and Greedy Williams has elite traits. His movement skills are absurd, feet are so quick and hips are so fluid. He makes it look so easy. Williams is a terrific athlete with the best ball skills in the draft.

  1. Houston Texans- Ed Oliver, IDL, Houston

  • Unfortunately for Houston they miss out on Greedy and Jonah Williams as corner and O-line are their biggest needs. That means turning to the best player available and keeping it local with Ed Oliver. Oliver is one of the freakiest athletes at 3-Tech you’ll find. His quickness, get off, and motor are elite. With Christian Covington hitting free agency, Oliver can be a massive upgrade with huge pass rush potential.

  1. Indianapolis Colts- Raekwon Davis, IDL, Alabama

  • The vision for Chris Ballard and the Colts is not close complete yet and they need to keep building in the trenches. Jabaal Sheard, Margus Hunt, and Kemoko Turay are a nice trio, but adding the freaky upside of Raekwon Davis can put this group over the top. Davis is a long athletic monster with incredible hand use as a pass rusher and an impressive motor. Stick him at 3-Tech or on the edge and this D-line gets scary.

  1. Detroit Lions- Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson

  • It hasn’t been a great start for the new-look Matt Patricia Lions. The offense is full of pieces but now the defense needs to be built up. Ziggy Ansah is hitting free agency and the Lions need to find someone to get pressure on quarterbacks. Clelin Ferrell is the best player on the stacked Clemson D-line. He lacks bend around the edge but his size and athleticism are impressive. Ferrell uses his hands well and has great get off speed. This can be the Lions double digit sack man.

  1. Buffalo Bills- DK Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

  • It hasn’t been a good start for the Bills potential franchise quarterback Josh Allen. Now they have to follow the blueprint the Rams, Chiefs, and Bears have laid out. Go all in on building around your franchise QB so they can succeed early. The Bills have the leagues worst pass catchers so adding DK Metcalf is a must. Metcalf is a height-weight-speed freak with superb hands and a magnificent ability to adjust to off target balls.

  1. New York Giants- Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

  • Surprisingly none of the teams picking before the Giants need a quarterback. The Giants need a quarterback more than anything and lucky for them there is one clear option, Justin Herbert. Eli Manning is awful and Herbert is perfect for Pat Shurmur’s system. He has insane ball placement ability, a strong arm, and the poise and mobility to extend plays. With Herbert in Shurmur’s offense with Saquon Barkley, Odell Beckham, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram the Giants will have their best offense in years.

  1. TRADE: Pittsburgh Steelers (from Atlanta)- Devin White, LB, LSU

  • The Falcons have few major holes for a team picking this high and it would make sense for them to acquire more picks. The Steelers need elite athletes for their lackluster defense. Without Ryan Shazier the Steelers defense has been awful. Devin White is a freak athlete who plays a million miles an hour. He’s as aggressive as they come at linebacker. This is the guy Pittsburgh needs to revamp the defense.
  • Steelers receive: 9th overall pick
  • Falcons receive: 13th and 77th overall picks

  1. TRADE: Dallas Cowboys (from Oakland)- Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

  • Yup, two trades in a row. Oakland misses out on Devin White and Dallas missed out on Earl Thomas. The Raiders need to acquire more assets so they trade out. The Cowboys are still looking for a star safety. Deionte Thompson is easily the best safety in the class. He has elite range and ball skills to dominate on the backend. On top of that, Thompson isn’t afraid to thump in the run game.
  • Cowboys receive: 10th overall pick
  • Raiders receive: 14th and 78th overall picks

  1. Minnesota Vikings- David Edwards, OT, Wisconsin

  • With one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, Minnesota has struggled because they have one of the worst O-lines. If they’re picking this high they need to take David Edwards no questions asked. Edwards is a big and athletic right tackle with crazy upside. His footwork, length, and hand use will instantly upgrade the Vikings pass protection.

  1. Cleveland Browns- Jeffery Simmons, IDL, Mississippi State

  • With everything trending in the right direction, the Browns have a chance to create a dominant D-line. Cleveland has taken shots on guys with checkered pasts before and Jeffery Simmons is a top 10 talent. Simmons can dominate at 3-Tech with his get off, strong hands, and elite leverage. Imagine a line made of Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Simmons.

  1. Atlanta Falcons (from Pittsburgh)- Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

  • There’s so much athleticism and talent on the Falcons D, but they need two things. More consistent pass rush from the edge and to stay healthy. Takk McKinley has looked like a good pick so far, but Vic Beasley just isn’t consistent. By adding Brian Burns the Falcons get an elite athlete with great bend and multiple pass rush moves.

  1. Oakland Raiders (from Dallas)- Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama

  • It’s been years since the Raiders have had solid play at linebacker. The issue needs to be addressed in this deep class. Mack Wilson was built for today’s NFL. It’s rare to find such a naturally instinctive coverage linebacker with great ball skills. Wilson isn’t a slouch in the run game either with sideline-to-sideline speed and aggressiveness.

  1. Seattle Seahawks- Dalton Risner, OT, Kansas State

  • It feels like the Seahawks need an offensive lineman every year. The O-line is trending in the right direction, but Germain Ifedi is a liability. Replacing him at right tackle with Dalton Risner is too good to pass up. Risner is a plug-and-play guy with an elite anchor. He’s a mauler in the run game with heavy hands and a SOB mentality.

  1. New England Patriots- N’Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State

  • All of a sudden the Patriots are depleted at pass catcher. They’ve had the second worst receiving core this year. Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarelle Patterson are all free agent’s after the season. It’s time to get Tom Brady a physical outside threat. N’Keal Harry is a 50/50 ball extraordinaire. He’s also a monster after the catch. Harry with Josh Gordon and Julian Edelman is intriguing.

  1. Denver Broncos- Daniel Jones, QB, Duke

  • John Elway hasn’t been able to draft a good quarterback. So he signed Case Keenum, but that isn’t the long-term answer. Instead of taking the physical specimen at quarterback the Broncos should get the high IQ accurate passer. Daniel Jones is a David Cutcliffe protégé, just like Peyton Manning. He’s elite pre-snap, a great decision maker, and has solid physical tools.

  1. TRADE: Oakland Raiders (from Philadelphia)- Rashan Gary, EDGE, Michigan

  • Oakland trades up this time. Philadelphia doesn’t have many holes so why not acquire picks? The Raiders traded away their All-Pro pass rusher for some reason and need to find someone to get after the quarterback. Rashan Gary has all the physical tools in the world, but his game needs polish. His hand use, strength, and motor paired with the athleticism will have Jon Gruden interested.
  • Raiders receive: 18th overall pick
  • Eagles receive: 26th and 74th overall picks

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Amani Oruwariye, CB, Penn State

  • One of the worst secondary’s in football belongs to the Buccaneers. They need to find someone with top corner ability. Amani Oruwariye checks the size and athleticism box. He’s also a very strong press corner who isn’t afraid to hit. The size, twitchiness, and man coverage ability is what Tampa needs.

  1. Los Angeles Chargers- Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia

  • On paper the Chargers have a Super Bowl contending roster. The main thing that keeps getting in their way is injuries. Their next biggest issue is the offensive line. More than anything they need an offensive tackle. Yodny Cajuste is quietly awesome. His balance and movement skills in pass pro are sick. Stick him at right or left tackle.

  1. Green Bay Packers- JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford

  • It’s criminal how inconsistent the receivers for Aaron Rodgers are and it needs to be fixed. JJ Arcega-Whiteside is like a basketball player in the red zone with his leaping ability. He can also be the downfield threat that the Packers lack.

  1. Washington- Michael Deiter, OG, Wisconsin

  • Would it be crazy for Washington to keep adding to their already impressive O-line? Maybe, but Micahel Deiter fits right in at left guard. He’s a mean mauler with heavy hands and a strong anchor.

  1. Miami Dolphins- Tyler Biadasz, C, Wisconsin

  • Laremy Tunsil is the only sure thing along the Dolphins O-line. It needs to get better, especially on the interior. Tyler Biadasz has special movement skills for a center. He’s clean in both pass pro and run blocking thanks to technique.

  1. Tennessee Titans- Collin Johnson, WR, Texas

  • Titans OC Matt LaFleur came over from the Rams and knows surrounding your franchise quarterback with talent is key. Adding Collin Johnson’s size, athleticism, and big play ability with Corey Davis and Taywan Taylor could be huge for Marcus Mariota and the Titans offense.

  1. Carolina Panthers- Chris Lindstrom, OG, Boston College

  • For whatever reason the Panthers can’t seem to fix this O-line for Cam Newton. They need a lot of help and adding plug-and-play guard Chris Lindstrom would be smart. He’s an excellent run blocker and uses his hands well in pass pro.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles (from Oakland via Chicago)- Kelvin Harmon, WR, NC State

  • With no glaring holes the Eagles just need to get more weapons on offense. Kelvin Harmon is a great fit for their passing game. He’s a big downfield threat who can help take the top off defenses.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars- Brian Lewerke, QB, Michigan State

  • Blake Bortles ain’t it and everybody, but the Jaguars, seems to know it. Their ceiling will never be the Super Bowl unless they find someone else. Brian Lewerke is sporadic, but the wow plays, arm talent, and ability to throw on the run is impressive.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals- Greg Little, OT, Ole Miss

  • With one of the best and deepest D-line’s in the NFL, the Bengals need to focus on O-line. Drafting Greg Little is a bet on athletic upside. His size, movement skills, and mean demeanor are perfect to start at right tackle for the Bengals.

  1. Green Bay Packers (from New Orleans)- Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State

  • Clay Matthews has been washed for years and Nick Perry is nothing special. The Packers can’t ignore their need for edge rushers anymore. Montez Sweat has length, athleticism, and a growing arsenal of pass rush moves.

  1. Baltimore Ravens- AJ Brown, WR, Ole Miss

  • By drafting Lamar Jackson the Ravens started a move towards an offensive identity. Now, they need to get more weapons for him. AJ Brown is a big physical slot receiver. His strong hands, ball adjustment skills, and ability in traffic are an asset.

  1. Los Angeles Rams- Paddy Fisher, LB, Northwestern

  • When watching the Rams defense, it’s clear they need some help at off-ball linebacker. Inserting Paddy Fisher can give them a huge boost. Fisher has great instincts and is a violent hitter. He’s good enough in coverage and with his motor he’s always around the ball.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs- Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky

  • With an offensive full of athletes, the Chiefs need to add more to their defense. Josh Allen is a physical specimen who keeps getting better as a pass rusher. His ability to move in space can be an asset across from Justin Houston.

Second-Round

  1. Arizona Cardinals- Noah Fant, TE, Iowa
  2. Indianapolis Colts (from NY Jets)- Byron Murphy, CB, Washington
  3. San Francisco 49ers- Dexter Lawrence, IDL, Clemson
