This time 10 years ago, the Orlando Magic defeated a Cleveland Cavaliers team led by LeBron James. This special moment in Magic history was in 2009, when the Magic were led by familiar faces Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson along with head coach Stan Van Gundy.
Besides the fact that the Magic were able to defeat James and the Cavaliers, it was the first time the Magic were able to reach the NBA Finals in this century. The last team was led by Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal back in the ‘90s.
In addition, the fact the Magic were able to make the playoffs was something many in the league were caught off guard by. Most were most likely unimpressed about it as well.
Many are still upset
Many examples of people being unimpressed with the feat are everywhere. If you go onto NBA fan accounts that showcase various moments in the league, you’ll see a lot of “what-if” moments. Some of those moments talk about LeBron never getting the chance to face off against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals. This was due to the fact the Magic were able to dominate the Cavs.
Furthermore, this type of post was recently shown from Bleacher Report. They tweeted out about how the Magic-Lakers series was the closest basketball fans got to seeing LeBron play against Kobe.
¯_(ツ)_/¯ oops. https://t.co/84tFxQLV6w— Orlando Magic (@OrlandoMagic) May 30, 2019
Additionally, the way the team operated wasn’t really seen yet during this time period. The Magic were a few years ahead of the times. The team mostly consisted of shooting a high-percentage of 3-pointers.
Currently, the Magic have yet to reclaim their former glory. Regardless, the fact the team was able to enter the playoffs this past season is something to look forward to for the team’s future.
