The 2017-2018 rendition of the UEFA Champions League group stage concluded this past week. Which clubs made it through? Which clubs had their hearts broken? Let’s take a look at the two teams that made it through the group, and what mouth-watering matchups we might find in the Round of 16.
1st. Manchester United (15 pts.)
2nd. FC Basel 1893 (12 pts.)
3rd. CSKA Moskva (9pts.)
4th. SL Benfica (0pts.)
In Group A, it was always most likely to be a battle for second to see what team followed Manchester United out of the group. Basel beat out CSKA Moskva to follow the Red Devils to the knockout round, and they’ll look to be a side that wants to make an upset in the Round of 16. The most surprising thing to come out of this group is the fact that Benfica did not get a single point out of 6 matches.
1st. Paris Saint-Germain (15pts.)
2nd. FC Bayern Munchen (15pts.)
3rd. Celtic FC (3pts.)
4th. RSC Anderlecht (3pts.)
Absolutely no surprises here. It was only a matter of whether PSG or Bayern would come out of the group on top. Both teams look confident and will want to keep up their good form into the next round.
1st. AS Roma (11pts.)
2nd. Chelsea FC (11pts.)
3rd. Club Atletico de Madrid (7pts.)
4th. Qarabag FK (2pts.)
In one of the bigger surprises of the group stages, Atletico de Madrid crashed out extremely early in this year’s tournament and will find themselves now playing in the UEFA Europa League. Throughout the matches, Roma and Chelsea were the two best sides and deserved to go through for the way they played.
1st. FC Barcelona (14pts.)
2nd. Juventus (11pts.)
3rd. Sporting Clube de Portugal (7pts.)
4th. Olympiacos FC (1pt.)
Unfortunately for Sporting and Olympiacos, this group was another case of two teams battling for first. No surprises here, as Barcelona and Juventus take first and second, respectively.
1st. Liverpool FC (12pts.)
2nd. Sevilla FC (9pts.)
3rd. FC Spartak Moskva (6pts.)
4th. NK Maribor (3pts.)
This group saw Liverpool qualify for the Knockout Stages of the Champions League for the first time since 2009. Despite capitulating TWICE late in the second half vs. Sevilla, they managed to finish as group winners. Many expected the duo of Sevilla and Liverpool to be the two teams from this group to qualify for the next round.
1st. Manchester City FC (15pts.)
2nd. FC Shakhtar Donetsk (12pts.)
3rd. SSC Napoli (6pts.)
4th. Feyenoord (3pts.)
Napoli and Manchester City were the two favorites to come out of this one, but Shakhtar had something to say about that. Maybe it was the fact that they wanted to see their coach come through on his bet that if they qualified for the next round, he’d dress up like Zorro.
🖤 Paulo Zorro Fonseca. 😍

Yeah. We’ll say it’s that.
1st. Beşiktaş JK (14pts.)
2nd. FC Porto (10pts.)
3rd. RB Leipzig (7pts.)
4th. AS Monaco FC (2pts.)
This group was one of the biggest mixed bags with any two of these teams having the potential to come out and qualify for the Round of 16. After an amazing domestic campaign, RB Leipzig fell just short in their first-ever appearance in the Champions League. Teams will be looking at Beşiktaş or Porto as one of the easier ties they can draw in the next stage.
1st. Tottenham Hotspur FC (16pts.)
2nd. Real Madrid CF (13pts.)
3rd. Borussia Dortmund (2pts.)
4th. APOEL FC (2pts.)
In this year’s version of the Group of Death, there were two huge surprises. One, that Dortmund didn’t win a single game, and two, Tottenham finishing first. Dortmund actually won Group F last season with Real Madrid finishing second, so no reason for concern for Ronaldo and Los Blancos moving into the next round.
