July ends for UFC this Saturday night with the penultimate UFC on FOX card and the first UFC on FOX event since ESPN acquired UFC’s television rights earlier in the year.
More on ESPN’s acquisition of UFC’s TV rights later.
In all, UFC on FOX 30 (main card 8 p.m. EDT on your FOX station) will feature 13 contests on Saturday afternoon and evening, highlighted by a Lightweight main event matching No. 3 contender Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez (29-5-0, one no contest) and No. 4 contender Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier (23-5-0, one no contest) live from Calgary, Alberta’s Scotiabank Saddledome.
This fight is a rematch of a UFC 211 prelim on FX on May 11, 2017, between the two. That fight was stopped in the second round and ruled a no contest after Alvarez delivered an illegal knee to Poirier, who was on the ground at the time of the strike.
Alvarez has gone 3-1 with one no contest in his last five UFC appearances, with his last win coming vs. Justin Gaethje in UFC 218 on Dec. 2 from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit in the third round by knockout, securing the Fight of the Night award in the process.
In the other corner, Poirier has likewise posted a 3-1 record with one no contest in his last five matches. His most recent victory occurred on April 14 in UFC on FOX 29, when he beat Gaethje in the main event in the fourth round by knockout.
Poirier himself scored the Fight of the Night award that evening.
Taking a glance at the tale of the tape for Saturday night’s headliner, Poirier holds a three-inch advantage in reach (72 inches to 69 inches), with both fighters level in leg reach (40 inches apiece.)
Give me Poirier by first round knockout.
Three other fights are featured on Saturday night’s main card:
No. 2 contender Jose Aldo (26-4-0) vs. No. 4 contender Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stephens (28-14-0) [Featherweight, co-main event]
No. 1 contender Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-2-0) vs. No. 5 contender Tecia “The Tiny Tornado” Torres (10-2-0) [Women’s Strawweight]
No. 13 contender Alexander “The Great” Hernandez (9-1-0) vs. Olivier “The Canadian Gangster” Aubin-Mercier (12-2-0) [Lightweight]
