Derek Barnett will always have a large place when it comes to Tennessee football. In his final season with the Vols Barnett became the career cack leader for the program. Doing this, he surpassed another Volunteer legend, Reggie White, who also went on to have a spectacular professional career. After breaking this record, he was selected as the no. 14 overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Little did anyone know, the Eagles would go on to win the Super Bowl that same season, Barnett playing a big role in that success. The Eagles were able to have two full units on the defensive line that proved to be extremely disruptive for offenses throughout the season. Barnett rotated in on these units as an edge rusher with some well-known vets, Chris Long and Brandon Graham. With his speed and agility, he was able to cause chaos in key moments such as the forced fumble on the Vikings’ Case Keenum in the red zone, causing a huge momentum shift in the NFC Championship game. As well as the fumble recovery off Tom Brady in the Super Bowl which ultimately sealed up the game for the Lombardi Trophy. After missing half of the 2018 season due to a shoulder surgery, Barnett looks to return to the field to make an impact on the defensive unit of the Eagles and help them return to one of the best units in the league. Derek was able to surpass some numbers of the great, Reggie White, at Tennessee. Will he continue the trend and become one of the best defensive linemen the NFL has ever seen? I think it’s possible, but only time will tell.
