The Sooners are coming off a tough win where the offense never really had a chance to get going. This week against Baylor, Oklahoma should have way more possession chances on offense. Army ran the triple-option to perfection all night, whereas Baylor’s focuses on spreading the ball through the air to their plethora of weapons.
One big plus for Oklahoma is that Baylor’s defense isn’t very good at stopping the run, they’re allowing over 165 yards per game this season. This could be a breakout performance for Trey Sermon, who for now, looks like the feature back in this offense. Kyler Murray and his legs will obviously be a factor in this game as Oklahoma will look to utilize them any chance they get.
Kyler Murray will also have a chance to spread the ball out way more than last week, and should look to get Marquise Brown involved again. Brown was shut down against Army, but him and CeeDee Lamb should both look to rebound against this porous Bears defense.
For the Sooners defense, there are huge expectations for a bounce back week. Baylor offers up more weapons than people seem to give them credit for, including Denzel Mims who scored three touchdowns against the Sooners in 2017. They also feed the rock to former Tennessee RB, turned WR transfer Jalen Hurd, who has 22 catches for 311 yards. Charlie Brewer has stepped up as the clear QB1 at Baylor, and he’s had a few great games this season. Brewer has thrown for nearly 900 yards so far this season, and against Oklahoma he hopes to attack the Sooners where they’re most vulnerable, in the secondary.
Baylor’s defense looked really impressive against Kansas, but then again, it’s Kansas. They haven’t shown any real signs of stooping the ball against quality opponents. Lincoln Riley will scheme some big plays to open it up, and Oklahoma should capitalize on these chances early. One player to watch on Baylor’s defense is big hitter Grayland Arnold, and the Sooners will need all hands on deck to block him, and keep him out of the backfield.
The crowd in Norman will be rocking for the Big 12 home opener, and the defense will look to feed off the energy to get some big stops and secure a win.
Final Prediction: Oklahoma 55 Baylor 41
